Italy meets Hong Kong at FASHION TO RECONNECT, Eugenio Franceschini Spotted

A Tale of Two Capitals: Featuring re-interpreted art installations of the Third Paradise and Tiziano Guardini’s personal curation of the combined works of 9 Hong Kong-based designers and 16 Italian designers and brands, FASHION TO RECONNECT is an artistic project celebrating the powerful intersections of fashion, sustainability and art.

Aside from the usual hype surrounding a new season, why are we all getting so excited over Emily in Paris? Easy. Marcello from Rome? Almost there… We can’t forget to mention – Eugenio Franceschini was recently in Hong Kong, gracing the blissful winter air as the celebrity ambassador for FASHION TO RECONNECT.

Presented by CityUHK’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences with Fondazione Pistoletto Cittadellarte and in partnership with Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, FASHION TO RECONNECT has also connected academics and professionals from various creative and cultural industries through a symposium, a roundtable and multiple seminars, epitomizing the essence of what makes Hong Kong a true multicultural city – the vibrant characterisations of Hong Kong and Italy’s joint cultural tapestry.

We were delighted to hear from Eugenio and the heartwarming tales that have shaped some of the most interesting bits of his acting career. Born in Verona, the glorious city of Romeo and Juliet, Eugenio cites his parents as the theatrical actors and puppeteers who have inspired him to venture on a journey of acting. At 18, Eugenio moved to Rome to attend the National School of Drama and Cinema, and eventually he landed his major breakthrough role in the States as the dashing cashmere heir Marcello Muratori in Emily in Paris’ 4th season.

Eugenio at the Peninsula in Hong Kong

HERE’S A FUN FACT!

Eugenio didn’t know how to ski before he had to film for a scene where Emily first meets his character Marcello on the slopes. “Oh. Never. And I tried once, and I almost died.” Luckily, viewers didn’t seem to notice — We were too focused on the chemistry mysterious Marcello shared with heartbreak-avenue Emily! No one could tell, genuinely, Eugenio!

When inquired about his thoughts on sustainable fashion, Eugenio emphasized the importance of assigning the right value to everything. You can occasionally catch him marvelling at tailored suits, pieces that represent the quiet elegance of fine craftsmanship that cannot be simply, monotonously quantified by just the stitching quality or the amount of blood, sweat and hours a local tailor pours in. “I’m not the kind of person who loves to spend a lot of money on clothes. When I do it, it’s for something special… because in this case, I’m sure about the quality. I’m sure about the uniqueness and the passion behind the product.” Nicely said, Eugenio.

The next time you visit Hong Kong again, don’t hesitate to tell us more about your adventures. We cannot wait to watch Eugenio at Emily in Paris Season 5! Ciao.

Text: Clara Yip | Photography: YK

Hong Kong’s culinary scene thrives on collisions – where East meets West, Tradition meets
reinvention, the sizzle of a wok meets the clink of a cocktail glass. On August 14th at
Kinsman, that collision took centre stage as Chef ArChan Chan of Peng Leng Cheng and Ho
Lee Fook stepped behind the bar for the first time, shaking up her debut signature cocktail
alongside a menu of Cantonese bites. The result? A love letter to Hong Kong, served with
equal parts nostalgia and innovation.

The collaboration felt inevitable. As Gavin, co-founder of Kinsman, put it: “We’re close in
concept, but also in distance.” Just a stone’s throw apart on Peel Street, the two spots share
a rhythm – where guests often drift between Peng Leng Cheng’s homey dai pai dong vibes
and Kinsman’s liquid artistry. But more than neighbourhood proximity, it’s a kinship of spirit
and passion. “It’s friendly energy. Very local, and we’re always supporting each other,”
ArChan mused.

For Gavin, the partnership was a long time coming. “ArChan is one of the big champions of
Cantonese cuisine in Hong Kong – and Asia,” he said. “I’m honoured to have her cooking
here tonight.”

Indubitably, the star of the night was ArChan’s AC’s G&T – a manifesto in a glass. “This is
going to be my signature cocktail in 20 minutes,” she laughed, admitting she doesn’t drink
much but adores the simplicity of a G&T. Her twist? A playful nod to initials: gin, green apple
(the “G”), and local sparkling tea (the “T”). “My favourite colour is green,” she added, as the
vibrant pour landed in guests’ hands – a liquid snapshot of her personality: bright, layered,
and unapologetically Hong Kong.

Inspiration came from unexpected places. She cited Liquid Intelligence – “It’s like the Bible”
– as she dives into cocktail science. “Creating something new isn’t about being original. It’s
combining things in ways people don’t expect,” Gavin echoed, a philosophy they both live by.
Of course, the food, too, told stories. ArChan’s oyster omelette-kimchi pancake hybrid was a
culinary passport stamp: “Oyster omelettes are a signature dai pai dong dish, but I used to
cook Korean food. This reflects my journey.” Meanwhile, Gavin embraced his in-between
identity: “Not fully Cantonese, not fully Western – but that’s the strength.”

When asked what drives them, their answers mirrored their styles – ArChan’s grit, and
Gavin’s curiosity. “Do what you love,” ArChan insisted. “Kitchens are hard, hot, and
dangerous. But which job isn’t hard? If you love it, it’s worth it.” Gavin added, “Be a sponge.
Stay curious. Travel, read, absorb. Creativity is remixing what already exists.”
The night wasn’t just a collab – it was a celebration of Hong Kong’s irreverent soul. From
ArChan’s dai pai dong revivalism to Kinsman’s boundary-pushing drinks, the message was
clear: tradition isn’t static, and innovation isn’t rootless. It’s the alchemy of both that keeps
this city – and its vibrant flavours – alive.

As the last sips of AC’s G&T were drained, one thing was certain: some collaborations feel
like business. This one? Just art, and pure chemistry.

EXCLUSIVE HAND – PAINTED DENIM JACKETS DEBUT

Hong Kong’s vibrant Art Week 2025 has turned the city into a kaleidoscope of creative expression and T&C is honoured to have interviewed Hiro Yoshikawa, founder of WASHI jeans, and Inna Wegener, visionary abstract artist. The two dive into their latest collaborative masterpiece: exclusive, limited-edition collection of hand-painted WASHI paper denim jackets—with Japanese craftsmanship intersecting and contemporary artistry.

DENIM ARTIST : HIRO YOSHIKAWA, FOUNDER OF WASHI

Born and raised near the serene shores of Lake Biwa in Japan, Hiro Yoshikawa’s approach to fashion has been deeply rooted in his upbringings. Surrounded by nature, he developed a profound respect for the complex connectivity of all things—an ethos that continues to inspire his work. After years of experimentation, Hiro founded WASHI, a brand that redefines denim by incorporating Japanese paper techniques into contemporary fashion.

‘Sustainability is not just a trend but the future,’ Hiro shares. ‘We need to rethink the entire lifecycle of a garment, from sourcing materials to its eventual disposal or repurposing.’ For Hiro, fashion is more than an industry—it is a medium for his artistic expression and a platform to build more meaningful connections on the planet.

The project embraces sustainability. How do you see the role of eco-friendly practices in the art and fashion industries moving forward?

The self described ‘painter’ for denim has used this background to approach fashion from an artistic point of view, with denim becoming a canvas for expressing his creativity. Much like other artists

My core background as a denim washing designer has led me to approach fashion from an artistic point of view. I see denim as my canvas and a medium in expressing my creativity. Just like artists exploring new sustainable materials, I always look for innovative and eco-friendly ways to heighten my creations. For me, the beauty of art lies in its ability to change something ordinary into something extraordinary. And this is the essence of my project – to create beautiful, sustainable fashion that resonates with people and the planet.

What challenges did you face in working with washi paper denim as a medium, and how did you overcome them?

I began experimenting with washi paper denim around 2014, but the initial results weren’t what I envisioned—the material wasn’t comfortable and required significant refinement. Through a lot of experimentation, it finally came to life in 2023.

What drove me was my dream to innovate the world of jeans. Just like how cars evolved from combustion engines to electric vehicles, I wanted to revolutionise denim. Traditional jeans are made from cotton, but I chose paper as it gives something distinctive that couldn’t be easily replicated. This uniqueness is essential in fashion, where copying is common. My washi paper denim can only be produced in Japan, and each piece remains unique.

What do you believe is the future of sustainable art and fashion, and how do you see yourself contributing to this movement?

I envision sustainability becoming the cornerstone of both art and fashion rather than merely a trend. My contribution is creating pieces that demonstrate how traditional materials can be reimagined for contemporary expressions.

Through using denim as my canvas for years, I am now incorporating washi into denim that challenges perceptions of what fashion materials can be.

My approach goes beyond using eco-friendly materials—it is about fostering connections. I prioritise building meaningful relationships with my audience and find it important to honour the craftspeople who bring my vision to life.

How does this project fit into your goals for Art Week 2025 in Hong Kong, and what message do you want to share with everyone?

Art Week represents a beautiful intersection of my passions. My goal is to showcase how Japanese craftsmanship and artistic expression can contribute to Hong Kong’s vibrant cultural landscape. To me, Art Week is not merely about the exhibitions—it is also about cultural exchange. I want visitors to experience how sustainable materials can transcend their practical origins in becoming vessels for artistic expression.

Through this project, I hope to demonstrate that fashion is art; it is a powerful medium through which we can communicate values of sustainability, craftsmanship, and cultural heritage. My message is that innovation often comes from looking backward at traditional techniques while simultaneously imagining new possibilities.

ABSTRACT ARTIST: INNA WEGENER

Born in the vibrant landscapes of central Ukraine, Inna Wegener’s artistic journey began when she was two. ‘Painting wasn’t a conscious choice—it was something that came naturally,’ she explains. This innate connection to her craft shaped her philosophy, which centres on capturing the fluidity of reality.

Inna’s move to Hong Kong brought a new wave of inspiration, contrasting her intentionally slow, meditative process with the city’s fast-paced rhythm. ‘My work encourages people to reconnect with their inner child,’ she says, ‘to rediscover creativity, sensitivity, and wonder.’ Her use of paper as a medium mirrors life’s fragility and resilience, reflecting the delicate balance of human experience.

What is your view on creation and art ?

Art is my way of letting go—of control, of ego, of perfection. It is a form of surrender, where the journey matters more than the destination. I don’t paint to produce; I paint to experience moments of pure connection with myself and the materials. The artwork is not a final statement but a record of an intimate dialogue, a particular moment when certain emotions, thoughts, and movements turn into something visible.

How do your experiences perceive the relationship between art and conformity in society?

I started my art school training at the age of six while also enrolled in a school that focused exclusively on economics and mathematics. The duality of these two experiences had a profound impact on me, and I often felt like I missed out on my childhood due to the intense studying required by both programs. As a woman from Eastern Europe, having my own voice and independence was something very rare in the past. Pursuing my dreams was challenging due to the numerous social issues we faced.”

However, the challenges didn’t stop my creative process, they protected it. Art became my rebellion, my sanctuary, my truth in a world that often demanded conformity. I learned to hold contradictions—in being grounded and free while preserving my creative voice.

With this, moving to Asia and settling in Hong Kong was a turning point for me. The city has so much energy, speed, and ambition. In contrast, my artistic journey is slow. I take my time, sit with emotions, and observe the flow, allowing each piece to unfold by itself. In this way, my art becomes a quiet resistance to a world that moves too fast.

Could you walk us through the meaning behind your style and choice of materials?

My use of bold, bright colours is intentional. They remind us of our inner child —the part that is still curious and sensitive to the world. As adults, we find ourselves armouring more with roles and responsibilities, even possibly losing touch with that raw version of us. I wanted my art to resonate and to reconnect people with their inner child.

I love working with paper because it reminds me of delicacy and vulnerability – it mirrors life itself. Paper is fragile, like us. If you add too many layers, it can tear . To me, paper is like a human with its bodies, memories, emotions. Through using this medium, I am able to explore the tension between strength and vulnerability, creating art that reflects both the resilience and fragility that is within us all.

THE COLLISION OF TWO MINDS

WASHI Jeans x Inna Wegener began serendipitously at an art exhibition in Hong Kong. Hiro reached out to Inna with an idea for a project and the two bonded over shared values on sustainability and artistic innovation.

When asked about how the two came to a consensus and their insights from one another, Inna admits that ‘Hiro’s washi paper denim was both exciting and intimidating to work with, it requires careful preparation and experimentation, but it also pushed me to grow as an artist.’ The result is a collection that redefines wearable art, blending tradition with bold, contemporary creativity.

Hiro’s traditionally blue palette found its perfect counterpoint in Wegener’s vibrant abstractions. He enthuses ‘Collaborating with Inna brought an explosion of colours bursting onto my traditionally blue canvas. Our partnership transcended mere artistic collaboration, becoming a bridge between distinct creative spheres—I bring connections from design, while she has deep ties to the art world. When these worlds merge, something truly magical happens’.

Writer’s Notes:

Witnessing the artists’ genuine passion and excitement for their pieces was truly inspiring. Their heartfelt enthusiasm resonated deeply with me, leaving me with goosebumps. The experience of interviewing them was enlightening and powerful, transforming my views on art.

Who could possibly say no to an evening of thought provoking, empowering conversations starry-eyed art — all to shed light on the beloved grace embraced by Hong Kong lupus patients along their journeys of resilience.

On the evening of May 10th, T&C was more than blessed to participate in Lupus Reimagined, a beautiful night hosted by Sapphire Shen on behalf of My Lupus Diary. Emceed by Vincent Tang, Eaton Club Central witnessed enthusiastic conversations and performances that brought to light the often-overlooked narratives surrounding “invisible diseases” like lupus. This event was more than an art exhibition; it was an emotional rendezvous that heightened awareness and empowered the creative pursuits of individuals who have to live with lupus.

MY LUPUS DIARY

Founded by three lupus patients in 2017, My Lupus Diary Limited (MLD) is an online patient support platform and non-profit organization committed to improving the quality of life of the lupus community through empowerment, education and advocacy. MLD shares and exchanges information, tells stories, organises activities, builds a lupus community and raises awareness of the illness.

We were astonished by the beautiful works of art created by nine lupus warriors — each art piece, whether that be a photograph or an intricate sculpture, revolved around the theme of a butterfly’s metamorphosis — a poignant metaphor of strength and growth. This theme beautifully encapsulates the journey of lupus survivors, who transform from passive patients to fierce warriors, capturing the essence of resilience, even in difficult circumstances.

From delicate ribbons to elaborate hand-stitched lace dresses, the evening’s theme was echoed in the attire of the guests. This common cause of raising awareness about lupus transformed the evening into a show of hope and compassion.

One of the most memorable moments was the interpretative modern dance performance, demonstrating a routine that used flowing motion combined with callisthenics, bringing to life the struggles and triumphs of the individuals with lupus, allowing the audience to feel the weight of the journey while, at the same time, honoring the power that emerges from struggle.

Throughout the evening, MLD Director Ms. Jacqueline Hester and her group performed a beautiful cover of two songs, drawn from her own experiences with lupus, combining hope, courage, and the transformative power of music into a deeply moving story. Following the performances, Sapphire Shen took the stage to share her own life experience with lupus and her journey. Her heartfelt speech brought many to tears, herself included! She spoke of the triumphs and battles of living with lupus, reminding everyone that there is always a need for compassion and mutual understanding amidst adversity.

Lupus: Reimagined was a continuation of My Lupus Diary’s previous events — Make Lupus Visible 2022 and The Lupus Revolution 2024 — bringing people together from different walks of life. The night was a reflection of the strength of art in the time of hardship, bringing people together for the same purpose in raising awareness and funds for lupus patients. We wouldn’t miss it for the world.

Club Manhattan saw an influx of social media influencers on the night of November 14th in the heart of Wanchai, Hong Kong. Organized by Pony Pong, a renown Hong Kong online celebrity, influencers all across the city gathered to network over drinks and advice on improving their media skills. Pony has pioneered online content creation within Hong Kong and explained the difficulties she faced, yet the “warmth and support I’ve felt from different mentors along the way has inspired me to create a thriving community where we all grow together”.

Pony invited a couple of her mentors to participate in a Q&A session, namely industry giants Angel Hon and Steven Yung, who gave guidance to the fledgling influencers. They spoke of authenticity, becoming your own brand, and how to build a loyal following. They emphasized the need to stick to your own values when navigating tricky contracts and technicalities that an online celebrity would encounter in marketing and public relations. Their message was simple: to amplify your influence, you first need to figure out the message you want to express.

After the Q&A session, Hon explained that the influencer should amplify her voice for a good cause. It was important to spread influence in a charitable way for a better future. Hon confessed that she personally aligned herself towards causes such as children’s rights, senior citizens’ rights, and mental healthcare. She felt strongly about those causes because it affected everyone in the home.

When asked about choosing the right cause to support, Hon answered with a few questions for the influencer to consider: Do you have a personal connection to it? What are the moral reasons deep down? What about the situation do you want to improve? By reflecting and sticking to your answers, the influencer can stay true to herself. Before she went home, Hon expressed her wish for a more conscientious and authentic approach to social media influencing.

Yung echoed Hon’s sentences of authenticity and explained why he mentored Pony in the first place. He offered his mentorship because he was drawn to her authenticity. He believed that integrity was crucial to building your own brand identity. When the influencer honours her own integrity by building honest habits, she builds a valuable community.

His personal philosophies were to always be grateful, enjoy life’s simple pleasures, and to keep learning. Yung stressed that despite his age, he still had lots to learn from the younger generations and joked about his small online following. Even with his impressive résumé and following the industry rules for social media, Yung struggles to attract a large following. He mused that the influencer needs to create a story that resonates with the audience.

Pony’s extravagant Empowerher: Amplifying Female Influence Party ended the night with giveaways from Kosmic, Hue Jewellery, and Yashica Photography. While munching on Honbo Burger and drinking Only Vodka Soda, influencers enjoyed themselves to DJ Suki and DJ Lana for the afterparty.

Last month, the Terms and Conditions Magazine’s team attended the Breezy Bliss X Arca Hotel event in celebration of pink October for International Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Super Pinket: Pink Perspective market was held at the Arca Hotel by Breezy Bliss and raised awareness for the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation.

The moment you step out of the elevator doors, you are greeted by an assembly of pink —- pink crates holding pink bottles, fuschia decorated the walls, and a round table adorned with differing hues of rose and coral arranged into the words, “A Pink POV”. The rest of the venue is embellished by the same varieties of hue. Pink paper bras, posters of A Pink POV, and standing tables with self-care goodie bags surrounded the speaker area. Gianne Chan spoke to the eager audience sitting before her. She told stories of her mental health struggles, the importance of getting along with others, and how singing helped her in overcoming her struggles. Gianne ended her sharing session by singing two songs: one in English and another one in Cantonese. She gleefully imitated playing the guitar and spread her contagious joy.

After her sharing session, participants were free to roam around the hall and perused the pop-up marketplace. The lingerie booth gave out $200 vouchers for their products, independent sellers sold thrift clothes and accessories, a jewellery booth showcased their products from overseas, and a perfume booth personalised scents for each patron. Other participants returning from the fitness workshops flooded the venue.

Located in the heart of Central, Hong Kong comes “We have to be very strong” a collaborative exploration and exhibition presented by Wyndham Social from October 18th – December 1st. This exhibition includes installations, participatory creative sessions and a workshop series on the neglected, intimate personal spaces in our urban daily lives in collaboration with a group of local artists and creative units. Collaborators include the Blu Journal, Sonia Wong, Santayana Li, Li Tin-yan and Linda Cheung.

OCTOBER 17 RECEPTION

“We Have to be Very Strong” launched their series of mental health workshops with art exhibitions and interactive displays, collaborating with renown artists and local entrepreneurs like Leanne Blu from The Blu Journal. With the project being separated into three parts, the first phase was hosted by Blu Journal where guest were greeted with three displays that helped them to step out of the quick pace of urban life, and to reflect upon their inner private lives. Walls were decorated with varying shades of blue as one of the interactive displays, and participants were to anonymously write a secret as a method of venting. Sonia Wong’s “Everything Booth” encouraged a similar sentiment as an art exhibition. It showcased the necessity of reflecting upon one’s mental health in the public, city life. Wong also fashioned a dance routine inspired by the Dance Dance Revolution arrows to inspire others to take detours more often; to stop and smell the roses.

The Blu Journal completed the launch event with their own contributions. They pioneered the Wishing Star booth: by creating a beaded charm and tying it to a star-shaped plush, participants can manifest their deepest wishes with other charm-makers. The Blu Journal also provided mirrors with prompts such as, “I am”, “you got this”, and “I feel” —- urging participants to write positive affirmations on the mirrors. By complementing the slow-paced reflective exercises of the other displays, The Blu Journal encouraged others to believe in themselves, and empowered participants with self-love and confidence.

Hong Kong’s 2024 CENTRESTAGE left a lasting impression on the city’s fashion scene: This year, Editor in Chief Kat Tse and Fashion Director Sam Wong were grateful to attend several runway shows at Hong Kong’s 2024 CENTRESTAGE

Held in the heart of Wan Chai, this year’s CENTRESTAGE ran from September 4-7. The city’s largest fashion event was organised by Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDAHK), and showcased over 250 local brands through runway shows, exhibitions and displays.

Designer Robert Wun’s show marked the beginning of the three-day event, and debuted his latest collection at the Hong Kong Palace Museum. By blending art, culture, and fashion, his show elegantly marked the beginnings for transforming Hong Kong’s fashion industry.

REDRESS

Redress, a Hong Kong-based NGO, is dedicated to combating fashion waste and promoting circular fashion. Each year, they host the Redress Design Award at CENTRESTAGE and invite designers from around the world to submit their sustainable designs. The designers are judged on creativity, originality, and sustainability. This year, Tiger Chung won first place and became the first local designer to secure an exclusive collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger. Their collection, “Wanderer,” used a variety of upcycled materials such as towels, curtains, and discarded sofas to create the winning pieces.

THE RUNWAY

The show on September 6 was divided into three parts, beginning with a stunning runway presentation from selected designers. Speeches were delivered by Founder and Board Chair Dr. Christina Dean and Executive Director Nissa Cornish, who warmly welcomed guests, supporters, and newcomers who came to learn about Redress. They introduced their 2024 partnerships, presented additional awards, and invited important guests to the stage. The event concluded with a graceful walk by their alumni and left a memorable impression on all attendees.

“I thought it was beautiful that each contestant’s story and inspiration were shared through a short video before the runway. Understanding their journey and passion for fashion and sustainability added depth and context behind their pieces, allowing viewers to truly connect with their fashion story and why it matters.”

The September 4th runway, debuting Z I D I’s Spring Summer 2025 collection was “a celebration of contemporary fashion with sustainability and affordable luxury at its core”. The theme and title of the collection, “Escher = mc^2.” was shown throughout the show, and the carefully curated music perfectly captured the mood and essence of the collection. Many members of the audience dressed in outfits that complemented the brand’s aesthetic and were loudly cheering and applauding between the carefully planned transitions. To end the show, Nathan Moy brought on stage an atmosphere of immense joy and pride, which perfectly gave the audience an insight to his dedicated efforts behind his successful collection.

“It was a remarkable show! What inspired me the most from the runway was how each model and outfit exuded their own personality and made a bold fashion statement that’s different from the others. I am excited to see more from Z I D I in the future!”

On September 4th, ARAO Jewelry launched their new Coral Collection at Novel Fineries in the Peninsula Hotel, displaying their beautiful pieces while introducing the collection, which is inspired by the coral reefs of the Philippines. Known as a contemporary fine jewelry brand with deep Philippine roots, ARAO strives to be environmentally sustainable while maintaining a strong commitment to their customers. The launch was an unforgettable and inspirational event.”

Influenced by the founder Mirabel’s heritage and passion for the environment, the collection features intricate gold and white gold coral polyps set with diamonds, to give the pieces that classic coral shape. As part of this campaign, there is a percentage of profit that is being given back to The Philippines Foundation (TPF) as part of their long term collaboration that focuses on educating the youth and conserving and restoring coral reefs and mangroves. The open house brought together many like minded individuals in creating a beautiful network that works towards shaping a better and brighter future.

Eye Catcher Global is a Hong Kong based organisation that brings Asian creatives and production communities to the international independent filmmaking industry. Our Editor in Chief Kat Tse, and Head of Writers, Justin Sin, attended two exciting events over the weekend: In Conversation with Derek Tsang and an In-depth Talk with Julien Rejl.

IN -DEPTH TALK WITH JULIEN REJL

The event showcased a selection of short independent films that were part of the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, including The House is on Fire, Might as Well Get Warm, The Birthday Party, A Storm Inside, and I Saw the Face of the Devil. Moreover, audience members had the riveting opportunity to listen to a Q&A session hosted by film critic and programmer Kiki Fung. Audience members also got to ask their questions to Julien Rejil, their artistic director of Directors’ Fortnight since June 2022, with questions ranging from how Julien believes movie internationalisation should be treated and the ways new directors might be heard or encouraged.

The theme of marginalisation was particularly present during the discussion, and Julien provided strikingly self-aware and astute answers to many such questions. In the creative industry, marginalisation can be characterised as the social, economic or political conditions that might prevent the realisation of an artistic piece’s full potential or outreach. The Cannes movie festival was one of the first opportunities where previously invisible films could have a spotlight; therefore, the Director’s Fortnight builds on these founding principles. The exclusion of many Asian films from this year’s Director’s Fortnight did come up in the discussion following the screenings; thus, leading many audience members to wonder whether Asian cinema has a place in Cannes and the representation-quality balance.

Ultimately, while it is essential for more diverse voices to be heard, Julien’s standout reply emphasised the need to be ‘surprised’– in a way that could only be likened to Ego from Ratatouille, the 2007 Pixar animated film. Art is subjective, but in this writer’s opinion, the criteria for ‘good’ art ultimately come down to authenticity and the ‘surprise’ value, regardless of its form. Thus, it was great to hear Julien’s firm reaffirmations of these values throughout the discussion on ‘How can we be more future-oriented?’ Participants greatly appreciated the opportunity to attend this event and hope for continued opportunities to experience, understand and discuss the creative industry.

IN -DEPTH TALK WITH DEREK TSANG

This year, Eye Catcher events were held at two prestigious venues, Soho House and the Hong Kong Arts Centre. Hong Kong Filmmaker and director Derek Tsang spoke about his recent co- directing experience with Netflix series “3 Body Problem” and offered insights into the film industry at Soho House. Moderated by Creative Director of Eye Catcher Global, Eric Tsang, the two dived into a thought provoking and meaningful conversation into the film industry.

Derek mentioned the importance of acknowledging mutual support required by both parties when considering the relationship between actors and directors. Actors can assist directors not only during auditions and filming but also through effective communication and trust-building. This mutual support then becomes especially crucial in fast-paced environments such as Hong Kong’s film industry, where pre-shoot familiarity can significantly enhance on-set efficiency. Directors are increasingly recognizing the value of establishing close, personal relationships with actors beforehand, whether through discussing roles or simply getting to know each other better. This understanding and trust will allow actors to have the creative freedom they need during filming.

When asked about the benefits of film school, Derek delved into how film can contribute to building a network of passionate peers who can become lifelong collaborators and explained how practical experience can often be more valuable in this industry.
