In a fast paced city like Hong Kong, one driven by ambition and constant motion, we tend to forget the necessity of self care and the importance of being attentive to our own needs.

As editors, we are often focused on learning and writing about upcoming stories in lifestyle and beauty. Sometimes, even finding it hard to slow down or make time to be present. Walking into the treatment experience withEstheClinic felt like stepping out of the noise.

EstheClinic offers several services, one of which is their recent launch, the ERA Mask. With the mask standing out for its structured, science backed approach with LED therapy, it has a sleek, sculptural presence where it’s inner surface is embedded with arranged LED lights. The shape of it comes with specific cuts dedicated for the eyes and mouth that are functional yet versatile, while remaining minimalistic and modern.

Photo @EstheClinic

And the results? By following the recommended use of the mask at least three to four times a week, this consistent application will allow your skin to appear brighter and softer, even restoring radiance and improving tone. Retailing at HKD 5,800 with a one year long warranty, the ERA Mask is now available at all EstheClinic branches and is known to be light therapy for the skin in home care spaces.

THE CONSULTATION

As beauty and lifestyle editors, we understand the importance of consultation where it’s crucial to set the tone before the treatment begins. The entire consultation was not rushed at all and was thoughtful and deeply attentive. The clinic carefully analysed what my skin was lacking and what I hoped to see improve from the treatment. Every step felt considered and each question was tailored back to my skin’s condition and lifestyle.

THE TREATMENT

Here is when the lights are switched off and you immediately start sinking into the comfort of the treatment room. Additionally, a Hydrafacial was added and tailored to what my skin needed at that moment. From start to finish, the treatment is delivered with reassuring precision where the whole experience felt consistently controlled.

Post treatment, my skin was hydrated and genuinely replenished. Even the next day, there was this softness and glow that feels refined, not overly dewy but still glowing from within.

A tale as old as time for many creatives is the journey that begins with a compromise. A “safer” path. For Tiziano Guardini that path began with economics, but creativity has a way of demanding to be heard. His innate drive toward expression, community, and purpose, ensured that his return to the creative was imminent. What followed was not just a career shift, but an answer to a long-strung call, one that would see Guardini become a world-renowned designer, sustainability advocate, mentor, and ultimately the curator of FASHION TO RECONNECT.

It is his steadfast belief that pursuing the dreams that call to us isn’t just passion but a requirement as “Each of us has a talent that is our duty to share with the world,”

That philosophy sits at the core of what Guardini calls ECOture. At its heart is a simple idea: “We are part of life, and life is part of us,”. Yet somewhere along the way, we constructed a world so detached from what is true, what is natural. FASHION TO RECONNECT exists as a response to that separation, a platform designed to bring people back together, and return to dialogue with the natural world.

The roots of this vision lie in a conversation between living beings and nature. For Guardini’, many of his earliest creations were made from raw materials, instinctive and unrefined. Though his approaches and method evolved into a more considered and embraced approach over time, the intention remained the same. Guardini challenged the perception that sustainable fashion had to be dull and boring, instead he remained determined to restore joy, beauty, and vitality to responsible creation.

Clothing, he believes, is the first layer between ourselves and the natural world. Rather than acting as a barrier, it should be approached as an extension of who we are, moving with us, evolving with us and all of the stories, and carrying our stories. Through conscious dialogue with nature, creation becomes a living process. “It’s about coming home,” he says. “Coming home to nature.”

Presented in Hong Kong, FASHION TO RECONNECT is supported by and shaped by the influence of artist Michelangelo Pistoletto and his concept of The Third Paradise. This is a space that exists between the natural and the artificial, the exploration of which is clearly key within this exhibition but also to Tiziano himself. Each designer featured explores this balance, questioning where fashion sits between innovation and responsibility.

FASHION TO RECONNECT challenges the idea that clothing loses value with wear, instead framing garments as living pieces that deepen in meaning through care and time. While sustainability has slipped from the industry’s spotlight amid commercial pressures, Tiziano Guardini sees hope in a new generation of designers who embed responsibility instinctively into their work. More than an exhibition, FASHION TO RECONNECT is an invitation to slow down, reflect, and remember fashion’s power to reconnect us as “we are nature, and life, we should be existing in harmony” with the world, with each other, and with ourselves.

Last month, the Terms and Conditions Magazine’s team attended the Breezy Bliss X Arca Hotel event in celebration of pink October for International Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Super Pinket: Pink Perspective market was held at the Arca Hotel by Breezy Bliss and raised awareness for the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation.

The moment you step out of the elevator doors, you are greeted by an assembly of pink —- pink crates holding pink bottles, fuschia decorated the walls, and a round table adorned with differing hues of rose and coral arranged into the words, “A Pink POV”. The rest of the venue is embellished by the same varieties of hue. Pink paper bras, posters of A Pink POV, and standing tables with self-care goodie bags surrounded the speaker area. Gianne Chan spoke to the eager audience sitting before her. She told stories of her mental health struggles, the importance of getting along with others, and how singing helped her in overcoming her struggles. Gianne ended her sharing session by singing two songs: one in English and another one in Cantonese. She gleefully imitated playing the guitar and spread her contagious joy.

After her sharing session, participants were free to roam around the hall and perused the pop-up marketplace. The lingerie booth gave out $200 vouchers for their products, independent sellers sold thrift clothes and accessories, a jewellery booth showcased their products from overseas, and a perfume booth personalised scents for each patron. Other participants returning from the fitness workshops flooded the venue.

On September 26th, writer Audrey To from Terms and Conditions Magazine team had the privilege to attend the Successful Female Entrepreneurs: Exploring the intersection of Gender, Art and Entrepreneurship talk in sharing tips of the intersection of Gender, Art and Entrepreneurship.

Conversing with various seasoned, experienced #female entrepreneurs in the industry such as Abi, PY Lau and Cindy Tang shattered my expectations: the Hong Kong creatives industry is stronger than ever. With the establishment of their newest initiative, Gemstone Lab, Abi and Cindy hope to integrate the transformative power of mentorship within their beloved community of Hong Kong-based artists, designers and musicians, providing a medium for those who have come before to inspire those who will come after.

Hosted by Abi and Cindy, “Successful Female Entrepreneurs: Exploring the Intersection of Gender, Art, and Entrepreneurship” is an intimate trace of their entrepreneurial journeys in fashion and the visual arts. Spanning a plethora of intricate individual experiences such as Abi’s founding POPABE also Parisian Macao exhibition and Cindy’s experiences with founding Novelty Lane, the forum touches upon our artistic souls, reminding us of the joys and pains of navigating the Hong Kong creative scene as determined, passionate women.

Hong Kong’s 2024 CENTRESTAGE left a lasting impression on the city’s fashion scene: This year, Editor in Chief Kat Tse and Fashion Director Sam Wong were grateful to attend several runway shows at Hong Kong’s 2024 CENTRESTAGE

Held in the heart of Wan Chai, this year’s CENTRESTAGE ran from September 4-7. The city’s largest fashion event was organised by Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDAHK), and showcased over 250 local brands through runway shows, exhibitions and displays.

Designer Robert Wun’s show marked the beginning of the three-day event, and debuted his latest collection at the Hong Kong Palace Museum. By blending art, culture, and fashion, his show elegantly marked the beginnings for transforming Hong Kong’s fashion industry.

REDRESS

Redress, a Hong Kong-based NGO, is dedicated to combating fashion waste and promoting circular fashion. Each year, they host the Redress Design Award at CENTRESTAGE and invite designers from around the world to submit their sustainable designs. The designers are judged on creativity, originality, and sustainability. This year, Tiger Chung won first place and became the first local designer to secure an exclusive collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger. Their collection, “Wanderer,” used a variety of upcycled materials such as towels, curtains, and discarded sofas to create the winning pieces.

THE RUNWAY

The show on September 6 was divided into three parts, beginning with a stunning runway presentation from selected designers. Speeches were delivered by Founder and Board Chair Dr. Christina Dean and Executive Director Nissa Cornish, who warmly welcomed guests, supporters, and newcomers who came to learn about Redress. They introduced their 2024 partnerships, presented additional awards, and invited important guests to the stage. The event concluded with a graceful walk by their alumni and left a memorable impression on all attendees.

“I thought it was beautiful that each contestant’s story and inspiration were shared through a short video before the runway. Understanding their journey and passion for fashion and sustainability added depth and context behind their pieces, allowing viewers to truly connect with their fashion story and why it matters.”

Established by Creative Director Nathan Moy, Z I D I’s Spring Summer 2025 Collection redefines deconstructive fashion, introducing a new alternative lens to virtuality and challenging our understanding of functionality. Z I D I’s new retro-futuristic designs provide a colourful neon contrast to the typical floral patterns of spring and summer. Looking fresh out of The Fifth Element (1997), Z I D I’s Spring Summer 2025 Collection screams “brat summer” and showcases the surreal reality of relativity.

The September 4th runway, debuting Z I D I’s Spring Summer 2025 collection was “a celebration of contemporary fashion with sustainability and affordable luxury at its core”. The theme and title of the collection, “Escher = mc^2.” was shown throughout the show, and the carefully curated music perfectly captured the mood and essence of the collection. Many members of the audience dressed in outfits that complemented the brand’s aesthetic and were loudly cheering and applauding between the carefully planned transitions. To end the show, Nathan Moy brought on stage an atmosphere of immense joy and pride, which perfectly gave the audience an insight to his dedicated efforts behind his successful collection.

“It was a remarkable show! What inspired me the most from the runway was how each model and outfit exuded their own personality and made a bold fashion statement that’s different from the others. I am excited to see more from Z I D I in the future!”

If you’ve lived in Hong Kong, the Sparkle brand should sound familiar. With cheongsam and culture at its heart, designer Karen Chan masterfully blends aspects of Hong Kong’s heritage with fashion, infusing vibrant colours and a playful spirit. This year, subtle appearances of Hong Kong’s iconic comic character Lao Fu Zi were integrated into her show, along with captivating performances and mahjong-themed gift bags for guests. The elegant models moved in perfect sync during the runway as they radiated confidence in their pieces.

“This is my second time attending the Sparkle collection runway, and each time the collection is always full of life. Designer Karen goes beyond fashion. She incorporates music, dance and decorations in capturing the essence of Hong Kong from various perspectives.”

On September 4th, ARAO Jewelry launched their new Coral Collection at Novel Fineries in the Peninsula Hotel, displaying their beautiful pieces while introducing the collection, which is inspired by the coral reefs of the Philippines. Known as a contemporary fine jewelry brand with deep Philippine roots, ARAO strives to be environmentally sustainable while maintaining a strong commitment to their customers. The launch was an unforgettable and inspirational event.”

Influenced by the founder Mirabel’s heritage and passion for the environment, the collection features intricate gold and white gold coral polyps set with diamonds, to give the pieces that classic coral shape. As part of this campaign, there is a percentage of profit that is being given back to The Philippines Foundation (TPF) as part of their long term collaboration that focuses on educating the youth and conserving and restoring coral reefs and mangroves. The open house brought together many like minded individuals in creating a beautiful network that works towards shaping a better and brighter future.

PROTANOPIA BLUE EXHIBIT

Protanopia Blues was an exciting exhibit by Diggity Douglas (AKA Dave). Dave draws inspiration from Dalì’s brand of surrealism and makes it his own by integrating unique colour play and symbolically caricatured features in his varied but strangely familiar illustrations. While the framing and proportions of many of the pieces in this series might allude to the previous Ice Cream Series, the Protanopia Blues is unique in the way it tackles issues of self-awareness, substance abuse and the artist’s colour blindness.

A CONVERSATION WITH DAVE

Interviewed by Hepsi Nelson

T&C: Hi Dave, from your painting to photography, we know that you use a lot of different kinds of art and mediums. Is there any reason to why you use one medium for something more than another?

D: I usually use drawing as a medium to conceptualize ideas. It’s like the genesis of my surrealist endeavors to put it really weirdly. I try drawing out my ideas and then transferring them to paint, to solidify them as more professional and unique and colorful ways of just expressing myself. Usually pen or pencil to start the idea, and then acrylic to make a quick flash painting, and then oil to finish it off with deeper color bases.

T&C: And in what ways has your personal background and life experiences influenced your Surrealist art? Were there any specific turning points that significantly shaped anything that you do?

D: I come from a predominantly Spanish background. I was born in Spain, and the Spanish masters of the 20th century influenced me the most, because those were who I was exposed at the beginning. Picasso, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, those were the starting points for me to base my influence on. Slowly I developed my own style through that, touching into abstract and Surrealism and portraiture, and combining the three. My influences also extend to Australia and Africa, because I’ve been to those countries and I’ve seen their art, and they’ve influenced me, the tribal colors and all that. My past experiences have developed my signature as an artist.

T&C: Is surrealism the only aspect of art that you go into? Obviously, your photography is more of a hobby, but in terms of your art, is it just always surrealism or has it always been surrealism?

D: Yes, for the most part. I try to dabble more into other aspects if I’m experimenting. Surrealism and cubism are my safe places. I started off in high school doing realism and charcoal drawings to see if I could capture more accurate lighting. I developed my professional abilities as a life drawer to develop the rules so that I could break them later. That’s something that Picasso says, that if you want to learn how to break the rules, you should learn how to actually do them first. Follow the basic principles of lighting, shape and proportion, and then you can learn to mess around with the subject. I find that learning about art in school, we’re always taught realism first and foremost. If you are going to study art, it’s always realism first and foremost, and they never really push for other things.

T&C: How do you think surrealism has grown or been integrated into pop culture in recent years?

D: More and more, things are getting trippier and weirder. Recently, I saw “Into the Spider-Verse”, which is the Spider-Man movie, the animated one. It was mind-blowingly surreal. It’s so cool to see all the different artists who came together. It’s a combination of comic style and weird paintings. It’s just really psychedelic. I feel like that is catching on more and more. People are really experimenting more with surrealism. It’s the dream state, multiverse and different ways of perceiving reality. Which is basically what surrealism is. It’s symbolism.

T&C: Could you tell us a bit more on how your color blindness affects your work, or the way that it interacts with your work? We find that many people often use their personal experiences as source of inspiration, has that been the case with yours?

D: In the beginning, I didn’t really notice it much, and didn’t really use it to my advantage. I noticed it here and there when I was doing certain things like rock climbing, I would be climbing in the wrong colour and things like that. Little by little people started telling me, I think you have a slight colour problem. I went about experimenting with it through painting and realised that my colours were a bit skewed. That actually gives me an edge in colour blending, so I incorporated that into my art. Little by little, I went about creating my own colour palette and an interesting personalised way of expressing different saturations and things like that. My colour blindness is called protanopia, which is a deficiency in reds and greens, but I don’t know how accurate that is based on online tests. You can only trust those so much. I have difficulties with colours that are really similar, so yellows and greens, purples and blues, things like that. If colours are too similar, then I can’t really distinguish between them sometimes. My intention for this new exhibition was to create really contrasting colors, with not a white background, but a black background, to make them pop out even more, to give them a sort of depth that really isn’t seen that much in painting. Blues and reds, there’s a lot of blues and reds. Which is funny because blues and reds really, for me, don’t go well together. If I ever see someone wearing blue and red, I’m like, ooh. In terms of the painting, I was like, you know, these actually work together in terms of contrasting. There’s a lot of reds and pinks that I found very fascinating, because whether it was on purpose or not, there were certain paintings that were telling parts of the story that were a bit more intense than on the other ones, and I found that very interesting. For this series, I just wanted to really contrast the colors that were trying to work together.

T&C: And in terms of your personal community, we know that building an artist and a creative community in Hong Kong can be fairly difficult. Is it something that you struggled with and have you found more of a community or built one?

D: Yeah, I mean the barrier in language between us Gwailo, white folk, and the foreigners and the locals can be difficult sometimes. That’s why you don’t really see that many foreigners collaborating with local artists. And I feel like that’s bridging slowly. Recently, I did an exhibition in Tsim Sha Tsui with the M+ Heath collaboration. And that was really something special for me because I got to collaborate with a lot of local Cantonese-based artists who I would have never heard about if I’d never done something like that. So yeah, it’s just about bridging the connection between the different cultures. Because Hong Kong is just a cultural hub.

On June 25th, Terms and Conditions Magazine had the privilege of attending the “Briefing Session for Hong Kong Pavilions FaW Tokyo 2024 & FashionSZshow 2025,” organised by the Sustainable Fashion and Apparel Association (SFAA). This seminar was a significant event aimed at promoting sustainability in Hong Kong’s fashion industry through the use of eco-friendly materials, ethical labour practices, and innovative production processes.

SFAA Limited Foundation, a non-profit organisation, is dedicated to fostering sustainability in Hong Kong fashion by encouraging designers to adopt sustainable practices. The organisation provides training and resources to help designers use recycled materials, reduce waste, and minimise their overall environmental impact. By advocating for ethical and fair labour practices, SFAA Foundation Limited aims to create a more responsible and conscious fashion ecosystem in Hong Kong.

Professor Alice Chu, speaking on behalf of the SFAA Foundation Limited, outlined the organisation’s vision and mission to advocate for a more sustainable culture in the fashion industry:“Our focus is not just on supporting emerging sustainable fashion designers in Hong Kong, but also on exploring business opportunities in markets beyond our borders,” she emphasised.

A key insight from the seminar was the crucial role of consumer acceptance in driving sustainability in China. In recent years, Chinese consumers have become increasingly aware of environmental issues, influenced by the rapid urbanisation and economic development in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. This urbanisation has led to higher levels of education and a greater awareness of sustainable fashion. Urban millennials and Gen Z are particularly receptive to sustainable fashion, prioritising environmental impact in their purchasing decisions. Additionally, corporate sustainability initiatives are on the rise, with companies demanding ethically sourced uniforms and work gear, further boosting the market for sustainable fashion.

Providing a deeper dive into the latest sustainable materials and technologies, Mr. Man Yiu, speaking on behalf of Mr. Stella Lau, a sustainable denim expert from Stella Blu Textile Limited, shared his insights on the cutting-edge advancements happening in the international market: “Designers need to stay abreast of these innovations if they want to deliver truly sustainable products to their customers,” he noted.

The seminar featured a diverse panel of experts who provided valuable insights into different aspects of sustainable fashion. Professor Alice Chu from the College of Art, Design, and Media at Sanda University, Shanghai, introduced the development and market opportunities of the sustainable fashion market in mainland China. She emphasised the growing consumer awareness and the significant market potential in major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. Ms. Chu highlighted how urbanisation and higher education levels have led to a more conscious consumer base, particularly among millennials and Gen Z, who are driving demand for sustainable fashion.

Dr. Arthur Chan, Fashion Archivist at the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI), presented on the innovative work being done at HKDI. He highlighted the institute’s six knowledge centres, which play a pivotal role in advancing sustainable fashion: HKDI Centre for Communication Design, HKDI Centre of Design Services and Solutions, Centre of Innovative Materials and Technology, DESIS Lab, Fashion Archive, and Media Lab. Dr. Chan showcased a standout example from the Centre of Innovative Materials and Technology: sustainable denim. This new type of denim significantly reduces water usage and chemical waste in its production process while retaining the durability and aesthetic appeal of traditional denim. This breakthrough in sustainable materials demonstrates how HKDI is leading the charge in creating practical solutions for a more sustainable fashion industry.

Mr. Benjamin Lau, an expert in the China retail market with experience in management roles at leading brands like Beneunder, Anta, Asics, and Nike, shed light on the evolving sustainable trends among fashion brands in China: “Consumers in China are becoming increasingly conscious of sustainability, and brands are responding by integrating more eco-friendly practices into their operations,” he explained.

Mr. Nakagoshi Yosuke, Director of Dawning Asia, shared his experiences with Japan’s sustainable fashion market. He discussed how Japanese brands like Uniqlo are setting benchmarks with their commitment to sustainability. Uniqlo uses innovative materials such as recycled fabrics and implements processes that reduce environmental impact, providing a model for Chinese brands to follow. Mr. Nakagoshi Yosuke emphasised the influence of Japanese sustainable practices on the Chinese market, illustrating how successful integration of sustainability can be achieved in large-scale production.

The “Briefing Session for Hong Kong Pavilions FaW Tokyo 2024 & FashionSZshow 2025” provided invaluable insights into the current state and future potential of sustainable fashion in Hong Kong and China. With organisations like SFAA Foundation Limited leading the charge and institutions like HKDI fostering innovation, the region is well-positioned to become a leader in sustainable fashion. The growing consumer awareness and the influence of successful sustainable practices from neighbouring countries like Japan are sure to drive further advancements in this field. The seminar underscored the importance of continued collaboration and innovation to achieve a more sustainable future in fashion.

Eye Catcher Global is a Hong Kong based organisation that brings Asian creatives and production communities to the international independent filmmaking industry. Our Editor in Chief Kat Tse, and Head of Writers, Justin Sin, attended two exciting events over the weekend: In Conversation with Derek Tsang and an In-depth Talk with Julien Rejl.

IN -DEPTH TALK WITH JULIEN REJL

The event showcased a selection of short independent films that were part of the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, including The House is on Fire, Might as Well Get Warm, The Birthday Party, A Storm Inside, and I Saw the Face of the Devil. Moreover, audience members had the riveting opportunity to listen to a Q&A session hosted by film critic and programmer Kiki Fung. Audience members also got to ask their questions to Julien Rejil, their artistic director of Directors’ Fortnight since June 2022, with questions ranging from how Julien believes movie internationalisation should be treated and the ways new directors might be heard or encouraged.

The theme of marginalisation was particularly present during the discussion, and Julien provided strikingly self-aware and astute answers to many such questions. In the creative industry, marginalisation can be characterised as the social, economic or political conditions that might prevent the realisation of an artistic piece’s full potential or outreach. The Cannes movie festival was one of the first opportunities where previously invisible films could have a spotlight; therefore, the Director’s Fortnight builds on these founding principles. The exclusion of many Asian films from this year’s Director’s Fortnight did come up in the discussion following the screenings; thus, leading many audience members to wonder whether Asian cinema has a place in Cannes and the representation-quality balance.

Ultimately, while it is essential for more diverse voices to be heard, Julien’s standout reply emphasised the need to be ‘surprised’– in a way that could only be likened to Ego from Ratatouille, the 2007 Pixar animated film. Art is subjective, but in this writer’s opinion, the criteria for ‘good’ art ultimately come down to authenticity and the ‘surprise’ value, regardless of its form. Thus, it was great to hear Julien’s firm reaffirmations of these values throughout the discussion on ‘How can we be more future-oriented?’ Participants greatly appreciated the opportunity to attend this event and hope for continued opportunities to experience, understand and discuss the creative industry.

This year, Eye Catcher events were held at two prestigious venues, Soho House and the Hong Kong Arts Centre. Hong Kong Filmmaker and director Derek Tsang spoke about his recent co- directing experience with Netflix series “3 Body Problem” and offered insights into the film industry at Soho House. Moderated by Creative Director of Eye Catcher Global, Eric Tsang, the two dived into a thought provoking and meaningful conversation into the film industry.

Derek mentioned the importance of acknowledging mutual support required by both parties when considering the relationship between actors and directors. Actors can assist directors not only during auditions and filming but also through effective communication and trust-building. This mutual support then becomes especially crucial in fast-paced environments such as Hong Kong’s film industry, where pre-shoot familiarity can significantly enhance on-set efficiency. Directors are increasingly recognizing the value of establishing close, personal relationships with actors beforehand, whether through discussing roles or simply getting to know each other better. This understanding and trust will allow actors to have the creative freedom they need during filming.

When asked about the benefits of film school, Derek delved into how film can contribute to building a network of passionate peers who can become lifelong collaborators and explained how practical experience can often be more valuable in this industry.

Amid the competitive dining scene in Hong Kong, dedicated chefs like Gavin Chin are opening new restaurants to satisfy the city’s food lovers. One such establishment is the House of Culture, which recently opened its doors after almost a year of preparation. Despite its inconspicuous location, the restaurant attracts patrons intrigued by its concept of highlighting diverse cultural expressions. The menu offers a variety of creative dishes that fuse Asian flavours with French techniques, ranging from ceviche to curries. The restaurant also features a bar and open kitchen, allowing guests to observe the culinary process.
