In celebration of The Stallery’s 10th Anniversary, CHANG shares his artistic journey and undervalued passion for contemporary art. His newest exhibition, Artifice, encompasses the reality of duality, meditation, and tension—showcasing the raw nuanced visual world of the in-between. As a multidisciplinary artist born in the US and raised in Hong Kong, CHANG admits his artistic practice is moulded by his experiences with red-green colour blindness and his multicultural upbringing. He shares his personal struggles of living in between divergent worlds, honouring the friction and highlighting his creative process in an insightful Q&A.

Congratulations on your exhibition and The Stallery’s 10th anniversary, CHANG! Could you please tell us about yourself and how your artistic journey began?

Thank you! It’s surreal to be celebrating The Stallery’s 10th anniversary. It isn’t easy, but I’m proud to say that we’re still going strong.

I started in photography and graphic design, but it wasn’t until I began experimenting with silkscreen, sculpture, and painting that I really developed my own visual language.

My red-green colour blindness completely altered my visual world and pushed me to experience colour differently. Art became a way for me to understand the world—and for the world to understand me. It gave me structure and purpose during the dark times when I struggled with addiction.

My bi-cultural, multilingual upbringing taught me to navigate between different worlds—East and West; English and Chinese; tradition and modernity—this duality flows through everything that I create.

Can you describe your creative process?

For me, blending the traditional with the contemporary isn’t just a technique, it’s a reflection of how I exist in the world. I’ve always lived between cultures—East and West—and that tension naturally finds its way into my work.

My process usually begins with a concept or contradiction—something existential and uncomfortable. Artifice started with Chinese scholar’s rocks. I reinterpreted classical Chinese elements, like scholar’s rocks and traditional embroidery, using modern materials.

I pulled pop culture visuals that shaped my upbringing into conversation with tactile, time-honoured techniques like silkscreen, hand-stitching or bronze. I casted bronze sculptures of the bitcoin icon and used embroidery to mimic halftone screen prints. These combinations created a visual language of contrasts—ancient and contemporary, handmade and mechanical.

It’s like a translation. Each medium or symbol carries its own weight, and I like to experiment by combining these visual vocabularies—layering, distorting, and reworking them until they feel like they belong in the same universe. The goal isn’t to resolve the contrast, but to let the friction speak.

What message do you want the Hong Kong audience to take away from Artifice? What does duality mean to you?

Artifice is about the dualities that shape how we live today—authenticity and artificiality. These dichotomies are everywhere, especially in Hong Kong, where tradition and modernity constantly overlap. However, rather than trying to resolve these contradictions, this exhibition leans into them to facilitate the most honest reflections.

I hope my audience finds the space in my work to reflect quietly. We’re surrounded by haste, pressure, and simulation. But, Artifice offers us a moment to pause. How much of our lives are shaped by forces both man-made and deeply human? These pieces are meant to unsettle and invite introspection.

What motivated you to pursue your journey as a self-taught artist? What is the most important lesson that you have learned from your experiences?

My mother was one of my biggest inspirations, she was an artist herself. But, my journey as a self-taught artist wasn’t exactly by design—it was more out of necessity.

I studied art formally, but I dropped out twice. At the time, I struggled with addiction, and I also felt that the academic system just didn’t align with my mind. It felt rigid, quantitative, more about ticking boxes than exploring meanings. I left because I needed to find a path where I could learn on my own terms.

That decision forced me to confront my own limitations and motivations. Art became a tool for survival and healing, for making sense of a world that often felt too overwhelming. Over time, I built The Stallery—not just as a space to create, but as a space to connect, experiment, and grow with others.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that there’s no single path to becoming an artist. What matters most is honesty—in your process, message, and relationship with the work. It takes time and consistency to make that balance sustainable.

You need to practice patience and maintain a healthy state of mind. Otherwise, being an artist is impossible.

What are you most proud of and how long did Artifice take to create from brainstorming to execution?

Artifice has been a deeply personal and gratifying experience. The conversations it’s sparked about duality, authenticity, and identity have made me feel heard.

This project took a couple years to come together, from its earliest conceptual sketches to the final installation. But, the themes of Artifice—the tensions between worlds—are what I’ve wrestled with all my life. It’s baked into how I see the world and how I work across mediums.

I’m most proud of how this exhibition challenged me to evolve. For the first time, I scaled up embroidery as a central medium, bringing a different rhythm to my work. Slow, tactile, and deeply intimate, like a Buddhist meditation. Where silkscreen condenses months of labour in one moment, embroidery stretches time, emphasising patience.

It also re-centres the usually slow and time-consuming ancient Chinese art forms into a modern China which is speeding towards digital immediacy. The tensions between depth and surface—ephemerality and permanence—are central to Artifice. They mirror our own experiences in an increasingly digitised world, reminding us that the human hand is the origin of all creativity.

On November 17th, our team was honoured to attend the Via Ciauri X CELLina Thanksgiving event. This meaningful night was the perfect end to a long week as the fall evening was filled with pumpkin pie, heart-warming personal stories, and insightful conversations with one of the world’s top cancer researchers. Via Ciauri is a London-based luxury Sicilian heritage brand that celebrates the handmade artisanal craft traditions of Sicily, Italy. Our team had the delightful experience of meeting the founders of Via Ciauri, Sabrina Ciauri and Mia Ciauri, sisters who share a love and talent for research, fashion and tradition. On this night, guests had the opportunity to admire Via Ciauri’s product line from the Carrara AW 23 collection which consisted of black and white corset tops with handstitched Italian sequin tulle – an elegant and glamorous addition to anyone’s capsule wardrobe.

Alongside Stacey Ciauri, an Emmy award winning TV news presenter working to boost non profit outreach, and global leader in philanthropy and social impact, Regina Miller, the Ciauri sister duo also founded CELLina, an innovative luxury jewellery brand dedicated to supporting and funding cancer research through non-profit organisations, in particular the Cris Cancer Foundation. Intertwining art and science, guests were invited to browse CELLina’s first immune cell collection of necklaces, bag charms and newest holiday ornaments which could be custom engraved on-site. Throughout the night, the CELLina team diligently and passionately shared the inspiration for their collection’s iconic design, explaining that the pendant represented the natural killer immune cells used to detect and destroy aberrant cancer cells whilst the ‘V’ on the necklace chain signified victory over cancer with the hopes of honouring and empowering cancer survivors and patients for their strength and vitality. The CELLina team also invited one of the world’s leading cancer researchers, Florencia Secchiari, for a panel discussion where they shared more details about their immunotherapy research and answered any burning questions about their work and area of study.

Written by Shayan Shah

Poem on Men’s repressed emotions by Shayan Shah:

The Strongest Man

There he is,
The strongest man,
The man of steel,
The Shah.

They say he built a whole village.
such a strong man.
with his bare hands!
The strongest man.

What nobody knows,
was what he’d seen,
death after death,
as brother after brother,
fell before his teary eyes.
Teary eyes that were forced,
Time and again to hold back,
Tsunamis of pain, Typhoons of disdain.

Disdain for the world that took from him,
his need to weep,
Disdain for himself,
for Father said tears made him weak.

Let me take you,
to a time long ago,
when the strongest man,
was but just a little angel,
who yearned to cry,
as much as he yearned to laugh,
who needed to be held in anger,
as much as he needs to be held with love.

One day, the strongest man
watched his younger brother
get swept away by the falling boulders,
gobbled up by the unforgiving stream,
Never to be seen.
one moment his beloved
Stood before his joyous eyes.
Stood in a heavenly land
Surrounded by a ring of godly mountains,
green pastures to the side,
the promised river full of milk and honey,
gushed and meandered through the land of the gods.
The next moment his beloved
was out of sight, as if he never was,
now he stood surrounded by
demons that towered,
laughing at his fate,
celebrated their loot,
mocked the little angel,
and the love and life he had lost.

A blazing flame arose
where the once milky river flowed,
He dared to let go of all he was taught,
allowed his body to release,
A scream so loud
That would shake the demons to their core,
A scream of fear and agony
deserving of the loss of his beloved
full of pain, full of disdain

Does this sound like a strong man?
“Shush! How dare you weep?!”
don’t be such a girl,
Be a man! Be a strong man!
Be the strongest man!
The strongest man
That does not shed a tear!”
“Never again will I shed a tear!
Never Again!
I am the strongest man!”

The Strongest Man

“I visited my paternal home, a tiny village called Raminji, perched on a 3000m tall mountain, after a long 18 years. The trip was long overdue for more than one reason. I connected with my family, my land and my deceased ancestors. This poem came to me after I returned to Hong Kong and started connecting deeper with my grandfather, Mehboob Shah, “The Strongest Man”. This poem is not just about him, it’s about all men, all of the “strong” men. It’s about time we learned to cry and “be like girls”.

Men’s Month – November

Poem on guilt by Nasheya:

Finally Free
I’ve sat with all this guilt
for decades
eating me alive,
with my insides rotting
and then I wonder,
how this cancer?
Like worms that ravish their meals,
this guilt savours every bite
of my prostate,
decaying, and allowing
the shameful maggots
to consume every last bit of it.

It seems delicious to it,
but to me it hurts
as my insides burst,
clench, tighten inwards,
unable to release all of that
heavy energy I carry within,
as if a child of my own
grows within,
but this child only
takes and takes,
as it expands
with each passing day,
with each domino falling
one after the other,
all my family shun me,
as if I’m a gross disease.

Losing all those who claimed
to love me
will be far from easy,
so I might as well keep
myself locked in till my dying breath,
never having to face
another day of shame,
another blemish on my name.
When I am not around,
no one will be able to remind me
of the maggots growing inside me,
no one to haunt me,
but oh I was wrong—
I’ve just become a
lone ship in the ocean,
even though I was
surrounded by my kin;
ostracised from
my own blood,
my ancestors,
forbade me from ever
letting my kin in,
afraid their unconditional love
would suffocate,
I kept on living,
showing them a different me,
when all I ever wanted
was for them to see me, as me;
One full of love,
One full of life,
One who got wounded as a child,
and of whom could never escape.

But now that I am here,
I set myself free,
I allow myself to receive
all the love You have to give me,
And I know I will always
be smiling and laughing through You.

Finally Free

“I wrote this poem for my grandad, who passed away a few years ago. He came to me during an intense meditation, and I felt the guilt he had been carrying all along as a man who wronged his family, who didn’t have space to feel and express his emotions, who wanted love but drowned in his guilt. This poem reiterates how important it is for men to express their feelings and allow room for self-love even amidst mistakes; love is the one thing that can save us from our shadows.”

Last month, the Terms and Conditions Magazine’s team attended the Breezy Bliss X Arca Hotel event in celebration of pink October for International Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Super Pinket: Pink Perspective market was held at the Arca Hotel by Breezy Bliss and raised awareness for the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation.

The moment you step out of the elevator doors, you are greeted by an assembly of pink —- pink crates holding pink bottles, fuschia decorated the walls, and a round table adorned with differing hues of rose and coral arranged into the words, “A Pink POV”. The rest of the venue is embellished by the same varieties of hue. Pink paper bras, posters of A Pink POV, and standing tables with self-care goodie bags surrounded the speaker area. Gianne Chan spoke to the eager audience sitting before her. She told stories of her mental health struggles, the importance of getting along with others, and how singing helped her in overcoming her struggles. Gianne ended her sharing session by singing two songs: one in English and another one in Cantonese. She gleefully imitated playing the guitar and spread her contagious joy.

After her sharing session, participants were free to roam around the hall and perused the pop-up marketplace. The lingerie booth gave out $200 vouchers for their products, independent sellers sold thrift clothes and accessories, a jewellery booth showcased their products from overseas, and a perfume booth personalised scents for each patron. Other participants returning from the fitness workshops flooded the venue.

Located in the heart of Central, Hong Kong comes “We have to be very strong” a collaborative exploration and exhibition presented by Wyndham Social from October 18th – December 1st. This exhibition includes installations, participatory creative sessions and a workshop series on the neglected, intimate personal spaces in our urban daily lives in collaboration with a group of local artists and creative units. Collaborators include the Blu Journal, Sonia Wong, Santayana Li, Li Tin-yan and Linda Cheung.

OCTOBER 17 RECEPTION

“We Have to be Very Strong” launched their series of mental health workshops with art exhibitions and interactive displays, collaborating with renown artists and local entrepreneurs like Leanne Blu from The Blu Journal. With the project being separated into three parts, the first phase was hosted by Blu Journal where guest were greeted with three displays that helped them to step out of the quick pace of urban life, and to reflect upon their inner private lives. Walls were decorated with varying shades of blue as one of the interactive displays, and participants were to anonymously write a secret as a method of venting. Sonia Wong’s “Everything Booth” encouraged a similar sentiment as an art exhibition. It showcased the necessity of reflecting upon one’s mental health in the public, city life. Wong also fashioned a dance routine inspired by the Dance Dance Revolution arrows to inspire others to take detours more often; to stop and smell the roses.

The Blu Journal completed the launch event with their own contributions. They pioneered the Wishing Star booth: by creating a beaded charm and tying it to a star-shaped plush, participants can manifest their deepest wishes with other charm-makers. The Blu Journal also provided mirrors with prompts such as, “I am”, “you got this”, and “I feel” —- urging participants to write positive affirmations on the mirrors. By complementing the slow-paced reflective exercises of the other displays, The Blu Journal encouraged others to believe in themselves, and empowered participants with self-love and confidence.

Hong Kong’s 2024 CENTRESTAGE left a lasting impression on the city’s fashion scene: This year, Editor in Chief Kat Tse and Fashion Director Sam Wong were grateful to attend several runway shows at Hong Kong’s 2024 CENTRESTAGE

Held in the heart of Wan Chai, this year’s CENTRESTAGE ran from September 4-7. The city’s largest fashion event was organised by Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDAHK), and showcased over 250 local brands through runway shows, exhibitions and displays.

Designer Robert Wun’s show marked the beginning of the three-day event, and debuted his latest collection at the Hong Kong Palace Museum. By blending art, culture, and fashion, his show elegantly marked the beginnings for transforming Hong Kong’s fashion industry.

REDRESS

Redress, a Hong Kong-based NGO, is dedicated to combating fashion waste and promoting circular fashion. Each year, they host the Redress Design Award at CENTRESTAGE and invite designers from around the world to submit their sustainable designs. The designers are judged on creativity, originality, and sustainability. This year, Tiger Chung won first place and became the first local designer to secure an exclusive collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger. Their collection, “Wanderer,” used a variety of upcycled materials such as towels, curtains, and discarded sofas to create the winning pieces.

The show on September 6 was divided into three parts, beginning with a stunning runway presentation from selected designers. Speeches were delivered by Founder and Board Chair Dr. Christina Dean and Executive Director Nissa Cornish, who warmly welcomed guests, supporters, and newcomers who came to learn about Redress. They introduced their 2024 partnerships, presented additional awards, and invited important guests to the stage. The event concluded with a graceful walk by their alumni and left a memorable impression on all attendees.

The September 4th runway, debuting Z I D I’s Spring Summer 2025 collection was “a celebration of contemporary fashion with sustainability and affordable luxury at its core”. The theme and title of the collection, “Escher = mc^2.” was shown throughout the show, and the carefully curated music perfectly captured the mood and essence of the collection. Many members of the audience dressed in outfits that complemented the brand’s aesthetic and were loudly cheering and applauding between the carefully planned transitions. To end the show, Nathan Moy brought on stage an atmosphere of immense joy and pride, which perfectly gave the audience an insight to his dedicated efforts behind his successful collection.

“It was a remarkable show! What inspired me the most from the runway was how each model and outfit exuded their own personality and made a bold fashion statement that’s different from the others. I am excited to see more from Z I D I in the future!”

Terms and Conditions magazine recently had the opportunity to attend the Snapchat ‘Less Likes, More Love’ National Portrait Gallery event in London on June 21st. Our London brand ambassador, Paul Low-Hang , attended the event which aims to cultivate more authentic social connections. During this, Paul had a chance to talk to Kitty, a member of the Snapchat public relations team. She revealed the vision behind the event, emphasising the ways that Snapchat will and has separated itself from other social media giants. Snapchat has and continues to prioritise solidifying friendships over superficial likes.

Therefore, the event serves to reiterate these themes, which are made even more evident by the surrounding timeless historical paintings that capture the true nature of humanity, as Snapchat aims to do through its own medium. This promotion of Snapchat’s new unique, healthy features that facilitate interaction between friends and creators alike aligns with the global trend among many social media giants since BeReal. It demonstrates a global shift away from superficiality and towards authenticity. As part of the event, participants also got to experience an augmented reality photo booth that was made to support International Friendship Day on June 29th.

What are your top tips for staying grounded in juggling work and mental health?

These tips vary from person to person. I could tell you that you need to find a balance, but sometimes, when your world collapses, that’s difficult. What happens when you find yourself unable to enjoy the things that you used to? What happens when everything that used to be sweet in your life has suddenly turned bitter? For me, talking about it has always been helpful. Just to have someone, anyone to talk to allows me to escape the rabbit holes I dig myself into. They don’t even need to say anything. They just need to listen. It takes a lot to find these kinds of people in your life, and let me emphasise that you shouldn’t always rely on these people. I am not encouraging unhealthy levels of codependence. Do everything you can to correct yourself first, whether it be exercise, a good meal, playing some games, or indulging in something that might seem ‘overly indulgent’ in moderation. I know that sounds paradoxical, but so many things that work with mental health are. Do what you need to do. Yet, if you find yourself completely overwhelmed with everything painful and challenging that comes with living, I think the best and most reliable course is to always talk to someone– a friend, a family member or a licensed professional. There is no shame in any of it.

What is the most important message you want to share with young professionals afraid to bring up concerns about mental wellness in the workplace?

I believe that, for young professionals, it is challenging to share mental wellness issues in their entirety. Many workplace managers often complain about the increasingly lax attitude of Gen Z individuals. While not all young professionals do this, managers will have significant concerns about the exaggeration of mental illness to skive off doing work. As such, young professionals should err on the side of caution. If you are overwhelmed, let your manager know, but do not just trauma dump on them. While an ideal world might be accepting of all mental health backgrounds, the reality is that managers have quotas to meet, and an unproductive worker, no matter the reason, is not suitable for business. Like I said in the previous question, moderate yourself, set clear parameters and communicate clearly without coming off as entitled as much as possible. If you want to keep your job, you must show that you’re willing to do what it takes, even in uncomfortable situations, especially in the current economic climate. If you are experiencing outbreaks of mental health illness, let your manager know and provide them with clear, evidenced rationales for your issues and achievable targets that you can reach.

Regarding juggling work and mental health, what are your top tips on staying grounded?

Create a routine that is realistic for your schedule, not overwhelming, and includes activities that specifically bring you joy; whether that’s reading before bed, journaling in the morning, or a mini morning workout. Take intentional moments out of your day to be still and to prioritise caring for yourself, whatever that looks like.

What is the most important message you want to share with young professionals afraid to bring up concerns about mental wellness in the workplace?

Your mental health is the top priority, it affects how you treat yourself, treat others, and how you experience life. Advocate for yourself, know your value, and don’t be afraid to ask for what you need. If you are not in an environment that values you and your mental health, it isn’t the environment for you. And that’s definitely easier said than done, especially in this economy, but always strive to go where you are valued.

As a business owner/supervisor/industry leader, what measures would you recommend to small businesses for them to uphold team spirit and positivity?

Have genuine, regular check-ins with team members, ensuring manageable workloads to prevent burnout, organise bonding activities, and maintain transparency about the business vision and each team member’s role within it.

I am the ocean.

Context:

I wrote Surrender to remind people that through all the ebbs and flows of life, including stressful situations that can break our resolve, we will find liberation even in the darkest times if we surrender to the divine will. Divine will can comprise God’s will, the will of the universe, and the force of nature, which are not in our control. By surrendering to this, we allow ourselves to be free from the illusion of control, accepting that the only way to find peace, to alleviate stress is by accepting whatever comes our way, with love.
