<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Written by Derek Wong</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The invention of the internet ushered in a new age. It is an age of digitalisation, multiple platforms of communication and novel ways of expressing yourself. Yet, the rise of social media has also spurred criticisms from parents, users and local authorities alike. Cyberbullying, hate speech, digital fraud or the spreading of fake speech are all acts which have affected the lives of the innocent profoundly and unpredictably. These issues have led to calls for the media and the internet to be placed under further control by social media organisations (as seen in the recent Online Safety Act 2023).&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yet, despite recent legal developments, the internet is still seen as this wild-west arena where the right to freedom of expression dominates. Thus, in 2004, <strong>Safer Internet Day was born.</strong> The scheme aims to educate young people, children, and teachers on making the best use of the online world by raising awareness of emerging online issues such as harassment, hate speech, data misuse, and fraud. This initiative was organised by a network of international Safer Internet Centres (SICs), which raise awareness and implement protective measures by educating users, running helplines and hotlines, and organising panel discussions. Ultimately, this aims to pave the way for the future of regulating behaviour within the online world in terms of striking the right balance between freedom of expression and protecting others on the internet. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Check out more about Safer Internet Day <a href="https://www.saferinternetday.org/abouthttps://www.saferinternetday.org/about">here</a>.&nbsp;</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, I’m not here today to discuss legislative reforms or my opinions on freedom of expression. <strong>I’m here to talk about how we can reduce the impact of the internet on our mental health.</strong> One main problem associated with the increasing use of social media lies in harassment, cyberbullying and hate speech (specifically, the effects associated with users on social media). Therefore, below, I’ve provided some guidance as to how one should approach using social media:</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. USE SOCIAL MEDIA AS A TOOL, DON&#8217;T BE DEPENDENT ON IT</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="970" height="541" loading="lazy" src="https://i0.wp.com/termsandco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-19-at-2.42.02-AM.png?resize=970%2C541&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-864" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/termsandco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-19-at-2.42.02-AM.png?resize=1024%2C571&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/termsandco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-19-at-2.42.02-AM.png?resize=300%2C167&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/termsandco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-19-at-2.42.02-AM.png?resize=768%2C428&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/termsandco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-19-at-2.42.02-AM.png?resize=1536%2C856&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/termsandco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-19-at-2.42.02-AM.png?resize=2048%2C1141&amp;ssl=1 2048w, https://i0.wp.com/termsandco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-19-at-2.42.02-AM.png?w=1940&amp;ssl=1 1940w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My first interaction with Terms and Conditions Magazine was at their panel talk event &#8220;Where Fashion Meets Wellness in +852&#8221;. I had the opportunity to experience a panel talk with four leaders in Hong Kong’s wellness and fashion industry, where I heard one of the greatest quotes to associate with social media use: “Social media is a tool”. To me, this reminds us of the full capabilities of social media, such as extensive communication, enhanced expression and an opportunity to make positive societal contributions. Yet, the harmful effects of social media lie in the misuse of social media as a tool rather than the intrinsic nature of the platform.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On this basis, we should approach the social media problem on our mental well-being. Rather than shutting ourselves off entirely through regulation and restriction, we should face social media with the understanding that such issues will inevitably exist alongside its use.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. DON&#8217;T COMPARE, STRIVE TO BE YOUR AUTHENTIC SELF</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="970" height="683" loading="lazy" src="https://i0.wp.com/termsandco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-19-at-2.39.08-AM.png?resize=970%2C683&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-862" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/termsandco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-19-at-2.39.08-AM.png?resize=1024%2C721&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/termsandco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-19-at-2.39.08-AM.png?resize=300%2C211&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/termsandco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-19-at-2.39.08-AM.png?resize=768%2C541&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/termsandco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-19-at-2.39.08-AM.png?resize=1536%2C1082&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/termsandco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-19-at-2.39.08-AM.png?resize=2048%2C1443&amp;ssl=1 2048w, https://i0.wp.com/termsandco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-19-at-2.39.08-AM.png?w=1940&amp;ssl=1 1940w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One use of social media lies in posts or showing the audience what you get up to. Logically speaking, in doing this, you will present yourself in the best possible light because human instinct demands that we do so. Thus, when looking at other people’s posts, you have to remember not to compare yourself to the best version of other people. Instead, you should focus on yourself and enjoy the moment. Be grateful for what you have and make the most out of your opportunities. After all, that’s what everyone online is trying to show, right?</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">WORRY ABOUT WHAT IS IMPORTANT, NOT ABOUT WHAT DOESN&#8217;T MATTER</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You may worry about what someone posts or says in the comment section. While this is what policy aims to combat, the first thing to do is to approach such messages with the right mindset. While it is essential to prevent harm and report abusive comments which have affected you deeply, it’s equally important not to let such comments drag you down. Constantly thinking about something someone said from half the world away will only cause unwanted distress and anxiety. It’s, therefore, essential not to care about what other people think but rather focus on the most vital things in your life.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Growing up in a time where I can talk to someone halfway around the world in seconds puts into perspective the wonders of the internet and social media. Yet, it’s nevertheless necessary to remember that social media is neither inherently good nor bad. Instead, it’s a tool we can use for the greater good or the worse. Thus, in approaching social media, it’s necessary to bear in mind the adverse effects of its use and keep authentic to yourself despite this so that we don’t lose ourselves in that realm. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="865" height="1024" loading="lazy" src="https://i0.wp.com/termsandco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-19-at-2.46.31-AM.png?resize=865%2C1024&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-870" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/termsandco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-19-at-2.46.31-AM.png?resize=865%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 865w, https://i0.wp.com/termsandco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-19-at-2.46.31-AM.png?resize=253%2C300&amp;ssl=1 253w, https://i0.wp.com/termsandco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-19-at-2.46.31-AM.png?resize=768%2C909&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/termsandco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-19-at-2.46.31-AM.png?w=1022&amp;ssl=1 1022w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 865px) 100vw, 865px" /></figure>

I’ve become quieter, a lot more cautious. Everything I ate, drank or did left me with an empty feeling. This was self-doubt, low self-esteem, and an overall sensation of self-regret for all the little f*ck ups I’ve committed, whether social, academic, or just in general. No matter how serious or frivolous the matter was, it was undeniable that it bothered me. That, in turn, leads me to today, to discuss the nature of mental endurance and resilience in our modern-day culture.</span></p><p><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #000000; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; white-space-collapse: preserve;">It must be acknowledged today that our generation, me included, is currently branded as the “snowflake generation”. We’re the ones who can’t deal with our failures, who seem entitled to a certain quality of life, and are always looking to blame others for our mistakes. Yet, what isn’t as understood is the fact that we’re growing up within an unfavourable geopolitical environment, with the Covid-19 pandemic, a cost-of-living crisis, and an emerging economic recession. Reinforced by the echo chamber that is social media, it is easy to fall into a state of resignation at the first sign of trouble, something that doesn’t seem to occur among the older generations of people. Yet, despite these circumstances, being weak is no excuse. Falling into that state of resignation and blaming poor situations on external excuses will never change your situation. </span></p><p> </p> </div>

Moreover, with enhanced social media, overflowing with constant highlights of other people’s lives, it has fostered this need for everybody to feel exceptional, to be as if you’re always living those constant highlights. For example, the first time I truly felt loss was when I missed out on my grades to go to my dream university. Looking back, it seems frivolous now, yet being successful, getting in and developing into greatness was something that I was obsessed with. Looking back, I now recognise that taking that first “L”, and taking any other subsequent “L’s” were tough lessons that we all need to take. There is the oak tree, who grows to be strong, hard, and large; and the bush, while not as large, is flexible and adaptable. Despite the larger and stronger nature of the oak tree, it is not the oak but rather the bush, which survives a typhoon. I was told this story during the summer break of my second year of university, having dealt with the pressures of sub-standard grades, catastrophic student housing and an overall scarred second year. This demonstrates that being resilient does not entail being strong and stoic, but rather to maintain a positive attitude and mentality to be able to be adaptable and find a way around those external circumstances. </span></p> </div>

Feng Shui in Chinese culture suggests that you need to arrange your furniture in a certain way; but to me, I interpret this as just ensuring that you live in a comfortable home environment. This was something I neglected in my second year of university, and it has caused me to be unmotivated, uninterested and overall unhappy. </span></p></li><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type: decimal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre;" aria-level="1"><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;" role="presentation"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Surround yourself with people who you feel comfortable with. There are people with many different personalities around, and it is obvious that it is important to get along with a wide variety of people. However, similar to your home environment, your comfort zone needs to be filled with people who are overall similar to you, or with people who at least accept who you are as a person. </span></p></li><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type: decimal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre;" aria-level="1"><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;" role="presentation"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Maintain a healthy routine. Eating healthy, staying active and maintaining a steady routine allows one to stay sharp, motivated and full of energy. Moreover, participating in these activities in a social setting would aid in the second point as well. </span></p></li><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type: decimal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre;" aria-level="1"><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;" role="presentation"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Always ask for help. Acknowledging your own limitations and staying humble allows you to not view someone else’s achievements as a hindrance to your progress, but rather as an opportunity for you to learn as an individual. </span></p></li><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type: decimal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre;" aria-level="1"><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;" role="presentation"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Finally, it may be worth taking a break when things get really hard. Not only does a break allow you to maintain a distance from the problems you&#8217;re facing, but it also allows you to view those problems from a different perspective, potentially even understanding why things did not go well for you. </span></p></li></ol> </div>

Moreover, it’s given me a fresh burst of motivation to push through the rest of my degree and ultimately reform all those bad habits I’ve faced last year. Perhaps, building a sense of resilience and learning to appreciate the nature of your setbacks are keys to a more stable and healthy state of mind. </span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> </span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> </span></p> </div>
